Say, What's In This Drink?
This whole uproar about the lyrics to Baby, It's Cold Outside is getting out of hand... IT'S JUST A SONG... I need to get some feelings out, so if you're here for the ride, hold on. Some radio stations are refusing to play "Baby, It's Cold Outside" due to it's "sexual -- date-rapey undertone in the wake of the whole #MeToo movement". Now if you haven't heard the song before -- cause you hide when Christmas music starts playing in stores -- click here to hear the song.
DISCLAIMER: I have no problem with this song, or "Santa, Baby"... my problem is with the hypocrisy.
"Say, what's in this drink?"
-- seriously that is the only line in there that gives them any backing to their claim that it's date/rapey. However, she says "at least I'm gonna say that I tried," & "at least there will be plenty implied" which means she's consenting to stay with him, (it doesn't mean anything happens) cause it's probably freezing outside. Miss Ma'am singing in the song starts off by saying "No dude, for real, I gotta go... it's late" but since she is a consenting adult and wants to stay -- maybe this guy was a real catch -- her mood switches to being more concerned about what people (her family, the neighbors, etc.) will think that an unwed woman is staying the night in a man's house -- this was written in 1944 when that was more of a taboo subject. Also, what was public transportation like in the 1940's? It was still fairly a new concept. I assume it stopped running after a certain amount of time -- especially if it was a smaller town. If the weather is bad, Mr. Man might not be able to drive, so what's his solution... send her outside to walk home? What an animal...
So since they're (whoever this anonymous "they" are) all up in arms about a woman being a damsel in distress and is clearly being taken advantage of because SHE DECIDES TO STAY... why don't we switch roles and put the man in an awkward position. What about "Santa Baby"? I mean, here is this lady... staying up till Christ knows when waiting for Santa. Then essentially demands him to give her all this stuff (money, jewelry, a house, checks, decorations from Tiffany's, a car, etc) -- and for what? Cause she's been "an awful good girl"? The tone of the song makes her sound like she has a gold-digging-money-grabbing behavior -- no disrespect to Eartha, I love the song, I think it's fun and flirty given the time in history it was written. Think about it though. This lady is clearly a gold digger and is leeching off Santa, and no one is upset about that?
Seriously? Ok... All I'm trying to say is if people are going to get upset about a song was written in a different time in history -- and while I'm not oblivious that rape did exist even then, it's just a cute song -- several songs from whatever time period can be evaluated and fit someone's agenda in the present. Why aren't these same people getting upset about some of the songs (or movies for that matter) that are current? While I await responses, I will be blaring "Baby, It's Cold Outside" on my record player.
